Dr. Keeker has special interest in helping owners bring the highest level of comfort to their pets by managing arthritis. Arthritis is an inflammation of any joint in the body and it can have many causes. The most common type of arthritis is due to wear and tear on joints from over use, aging, injury, or from an unstable joint such as which occurs with a ruptured ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in the knee. The chronic form of this disease is called degenerative joint disease (DJD).
Treatment for arthritis should address the cause if possible; orthopedic surgery may be needed to stabilize a joint. DJD may be treated with anti-inflammatories, pain medication or cartilage protective agents such as glucosamine.
